Two recently granted Apple patents have given a glimpse into how Apple might handle tablet navigation in future iPad models.  The patents document a so-called intelligent bezel, where the section of chassis surrounding the main display could respond to touch input.

Capacitive sensors running around the edges of the screen would trigger contextual menu options, similar to the soft-keys generally found at the bottom of a smartphone display.  However in Apple’s case, these soft-keys could be docked at any of the four screen edges, as well as being of different sizes, and they would rotate as the iPad itself flipped orientation.

Different bezel-touches could be linked to different on-screen controls, meanwhile, and Apple have also worked in some discrimination technology so that merely gripping the iPad – or whatever tablet this tech might appear on – won’t accidentally fire off a load of menu choices.

  1. i cant really see this being usefull for myself personally
  2. I have one and it works very well. my gps in phone stopped working. no jailbreak necessary for this model, some other ones do require a jailbreak i think. Thats why i went with the xGPS. backup iPad to PC I can't believe Apple got a patent for something as generic as rows of icons with rounded corners and a fix bar of icons at the bottom. So tomorrow if Apple comes up with widgets or multiple homescreens on iOS, then should Google and Android handset manufacturers sue Apple for this? Seems just about as plausible as this lawsuit.
  3. Apple has to have something "new" every couple of months to stay in the news. What else were they going to do in April? mov to flv If we have a feature I would like biteSMS the drops JB but I can not live without it ... Answer text without opening app could have seen great interest
