Apple’s App Store Explicit Category Appears, Then Gets Pulled
Just as we were about to bring you the story of Apple releasing an ‘explicit’ category into the App Store, it seems that things have changed. Just in case you missed the reports, Apple has gone back into the media regarding their removal of an application (or in this case, 5,000 applications) due to their specific reasoning. This time, it was skin. And, as we just mentioned, five thousand applications (including small digital storefronts for swimwear) managed to get the boot. Left behind was the Playboy app, along with Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition application.
Apple had apparently heard the crowd speak up, and a few hours ago a developer noticed that a new category had appeared within the App Store’s submission guidelines. You guessed it: explicit. You don’t have to use much of your imagination to see what kind of applications would have been designated explicit, but we imagine Apple does.
And yet, that’s not the end of the story. It seems, according to the same developer, that the category has mysteriously disappeared altogether, just as quickly as it had shown up. The developer apparently put in a call to Apple, and they confirmed the removal of the vagrant category. Furthermore, Apple is indeed working on something of this nature, but it could be quite awhile before anything official comes to light from it. What do you think? Does the Apple store need an explicit category and separate digital storefront? Or is all of this pointless?
