No doubt, the focus for a lot of companies out there is to make it into as many markets as they can. Especially the ones where, you know, they’ll be making money. The mobile market is definitely one of those markets, and it’s good to see reputable sources such as the Associated Press doing what they have to do to make it happen. The time-tested news outlet is preparing to launch “AP Gateway,” with an iPad application positioned to be the tip of the spear.

If you’ll recall, other organizations are trying to do the same thing, with an application the main focus of their entrance into the market. And, much like those other organizations, the Associated Press might have plans to make their Gateway a subscription-based model. Strangely enough though, according to an AP executive, while plans are being drawn up as we write this to create a paid app, the AP Gateway might launch with more of a free tag pinned to it.

In the same way that the current AP mobile news app, the iPad application is meant to showcase custom packages of headlines, photos, videos, and stories. Other news outlets, such as local newspapers and broadcasters can choose to distribute their content through the AP Gateway if they want to share in the revenue. We can say that we’re excited or more applications, especially ones designed specifically for the iPad, but all we can say is that we hope it runs a bit smoother than what’s happening at those other news outlets.
