Barnes & Noble have confirmed that they are working on a version of their B&N eReader ebook reader software suited for Apple’s upcoming iPad.  In a post on the company’s blog, B&N describe the free app as offering the same ebook access as their nook dedicated ereader.

That means it will be able to sync with other B&N eReader apps used with the same account but on other platforms – the company currently offers it for PC, Mac, iPhone, iPod touch and Blackberry – as well as download new titles.  B&N reckon they have more than one million eBooks, magazines and newspapers to choose from.

Of course, they’re not alone in looking at the iPad as an electronic reading platform; Apple themselves are heavily promoting it as such too.  They’ll be preloading their own iBooks app onto the tablet, and it remains to be seen whether they’ll also allow B&N to occupy similar ground by approving them for the iPad version of the App Store.  Given we’ve seen reluctance to permit rival music stores take up place on the iPod touch and iPhone previously, we can’t exactly see Apple allowing B&N to take a bite out of this new market.
