Citrix Receiver for iPad Available Now [Video]

It’s been over two months since we last reported anything on Citrix Receiver, and that’s because they’ve been pretty quiet on the home (iPad) front since we first brought them to your attention. But, now that the iPad’s been out for two weeks, and they’ve got their software figured out and ready to go, they’ve launched their Citrix Receiver for the iPad. It’s an application, much the same as the iPhone version they’ve released in the past, and it allows you to run a virtual desktop right there on your iPad. That’s right — no emulator, or Windows 95 needed.
Now, virtual offices aren’t new. In fact, they’ve been around for awhile now. And, if you’re a business person who is on the go a lot, but you keep the majority of your important work items on your office desktop, they are a great feature to have. With a virtual office, you can access all the applications and features of your desktop PC, but without having to carry that huge tower around with you wherever you go. It also offers a host of security options, so that you know that all your information is protected, both on the desktop as well as the application running on your iPad.
But, what makes the iPad version so much better? Put simply, it’s optimized for the iPad. Meaning, instead of having to hit those small boxes all the time, or go through endless lists or hit start buttons all the time, you’re able to access the majority of applications and features within your virtual office while still using the functional User Interface brought to you by the iPad, thanks to iPhone OS 3.2. In the video below, you can see that Chris Fleck has opened four different applications, one of which is an intensive 3D application, and the system is still going strong. As long as you download the desktop client, which is called XenDesktop, you’ll be able to access the client on your iPad, and have at it with the virtual office. It should be relatively easy to set up, but it’s obvious that Citrix is aiming this for corporate folks, and not the general mainstream. Of course, we can think of a few reasons why mainstream consumers would want to test it out.
The Citrix Receiver app for the iPad is available right now, and you can download that along with the desktop client to get everything set up.
