iPad Connectivity and Data Plan
The Apple iPad will be available in WiFi-only and WiFi/3G versions, and like with the iPhone Apple have partnered with AT&T in the USA to provide a data connection. The iPad 3G will be available in 16GB, 32Gb and 64GB models, priced at $629, $729 and $829 respectively.
Two data packages will be available with AT&T. The cheapest iPad 3G data package is $14.99 per month for up to 250MB of data. For unlimited iPad 3G data, AT&T will charge $29.99 per month. Both packages are contract-free, and can be activated directly on the iPad itself, rather than requiring a trip to an AT&T store. 3G data service is pre-paid.
In addition, iPad 3G users will also get unlimited access to AT&T WiFi hotspots. AT&T have WiFi hotspots for iPad use both in the USA and abroad, in airports, Starbucks and McDonald’s, as well as other locations.
Apple will announce international carrier partnerships in the June/July 2010 timeframe. However the Apple iPad will go on sale worldwide in late March or early April 2010 in WiFi-form only, with the US AT&T 3G models available a month after that. The 3G modems themselves will be provided unlocked, and will use GSM Micro-SIM cards for use when traveling.
