Apple TV’s purpose in a world after the iPad may be hazy to some, but it seems Apple has a plan for the platform, at least in one way or another. Within the iTunes Store, it looks like a few television shows out there have seen their prices get slashed, in some cases all the way down to 99 cents. That’s a huge help to a lot of people out there, especially if Apple TV isn’t something they’ve grabbed onto yet.
There’s still a lot of chatter about what Apple is planning to do with Apple TV: whether or not the platform will disappear over time, or if a subscription-based system would be better for the available TV shows. As it currently stands, it seems that the talks between Apple and distributors have come to a halt in terms of any kind of subscription system, which means we’re probably not going to see an announcement of that sort right around the corner. Of course, we’re sure that Apple is trying to get something long-term figured out before the launch of the iPad, so that users have an easy way to watch more TV and movies on their tablets.
While some shows that were previously $1.99 and $2.99 (for Standard and High Definition, respectively) have been dropped to 99 cents, there have even been a few of them that have been dropped to free. We’re not surprised by this at all: with the launch of a new piece of hardware, it’s wise of Apple to drop the prices of their digital media, even if for only a short time, to promote people to buy that as well. The big question will be if Apple does manage to create a subscription system for TV shows, will people jump on it? Hopefully by the time the iPad launches, we’ll know for sure.
