Even amidst all this talk about the iPad not being the hot ticket everyone thought it would be, it looks like at least several hundred people are interested in developing for the future tablet. That’s right. According to Flurry, the analytics company that watches over applications, and their development, for Apple’s App Store and other sources, they’ve seen the single highest spike in application development since they started, you know, analyzing applications.
As you can see from the image, they aren’t exaggerating. The increase in development since the release of the iPad SDK is phenomenal to say the least. And while we’d love to say that that increase means there will be a flood of new applications to the App Store for the launch of the iPad, we’d be willing to bet that the majority of those developers are tweaking current-gen apps to work perfectly for the larger screen. We expect there to be plenty of new apps, but also quite a few “oldie-but-goodies.”
This shouldn’t really surprise anyone, even if you just think about the developer standpoint. This is a new platform, and one they all assume is going to be a smash hit, like the iPhone and iPod Touch. They want to cash in on it. And Apple’s ace in the hole was a simple one: making the iPad’s OS match the iPhone’s. That way developers know exactly what they’re doing, and can push out the apps (with Apple’s approval, of course) without the need to jump over any extra obstacles. And don’t forget: when the iPad launches, the App Store is going to promote the iPad-specific applications right at the front. You won’t be able to miss them.
