What’s to Come of the iBookstore Content?

Apple has become well known for their paradoxical moves when it comes to banning applications from their App Store, and we were beginning to think that by now, people would have become accustomed to it. Apparently that’s not the case. There’s an up-roar going on right now, with the App Store caught in the middle, regarding Apple’s removal of some 5,000 applications, all of which had some kind of “skin” in them. Of course, the trouble consists of those 5,000 apps disappearing, and applications such as Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit app, or even worse, Playboy’s app remaining firmly rooted in the digital store. But, let’s look into the future, at what’s coming: the iBookstore.
Seth Weintraub has written a piece for Computer World, and it outlines his thoughts on the iBookstore, and how its inherent relation to the App Store could mean a troubling future is in store for the digital bookstore. Basically, because the iBookstore is an application in of itself, and one you need to download from the App Store, then Weintraub postulates that the store would need to follow by the App Store’s rule-set. This, sadly enough, would probably be the case. Unless Apple changes the rules for its iBookstore, then it would seem that, considering it is an application, the rules that have been justified for every application to come before it, would fall upon its lap as well.
This is just conjecture, and Apple hasn’t come out to clarify anything just yet. Not that they really need to, but it might be nice for the rest of us to get some clarification before (or after, whichever works for you, Apple) the iBookstore launches. But Weintraub does have a good point. Should we expect the iBookstore to be G-rated as well, to make sure the kids and parents aren’t offended? Will the Kama Sutra be forgotten about in the digital revolution? Or, how about any books that aren’t teen fiction? We’ll just have to wait and see, and hope that Apple lets us all know soon.
